Individual Therapy
Individual Therapy for Adults in Sorrento Valley
One room, one clinician, and the time to get to what is actually going on. For adults 18 and older. Call (858) 567-4246.
A standing hour that is yours
Individual therapy is the private, one-to-one part of care — a licensed clinician, a regular appointment, and work that goes at your pace rather than a group's.
- The same clinician each time, so you are not starting over at every session.
- Room for what a group cannot hold — the specific history, the thing you are not ready to say out loud to eight other people.
- On its own or alongside the rest, with your care team coordinating either way.
What to expect
How our therapy works
What sets our individual therapy apart from others in San Diego.
-
Included in the IOP, not billed as an extra
Everyone in our Intensive Outpatient Program gets a one-to-one session every week with their own therapist, scheduled outside group time. It is part of the program rather than something you arrange yourself.
-
A team behind one clinician
Your therapist sits in the same practice as the prescribers and the group clinicians. When something needs a second view, it does not take an outside referral and a three-week wait to get one.
-
The approach follows you
We draw on cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, compassion-focused therapy, motivational interviewing and behavioral activation. Which of those gets used, and when, depends on what you are working on.
-
Trauma is treated as trauma
Where trauma is part of the picture, our clinicians work from Seeking Safety — the same dedicated curriculum the program uses — rather than treating it as background to something else.
Who it is for
Adults 18 and older living with:
Therapy on its own is the right starting point for a lot of people. For some it is not enough on its own, and the consultation is partly about working out which of those you are. If more structure would help, we will say so and talk you through the IOP.
Available by telehealth anywhere in California. Our clinicians are licensed in California, so where you are in the state does not decide whether you can be seen. Whether telehealth suits what you are dealing with is part of what the assessment establishes.
We do not provide substance use treatment, detox, eating disorder treatment, or residential and inpatient care, and we do not offer couples, family or child therapy. If that is what you need, we will provide appropriate referrals.
Getting started
Four steps. Nothing is scheduled and no records are requested until you decide to go ahead.
Consultation
A short, private call. If we are not the right fit, we will say so.
Assessment
An evaluation with a clinician to establish the right level of care.
Insurance
We verify your benefits and go through costs before a date is set.
First session
You meet your therapist and decide together what you are working on.
Paying for care yourself? You are entitled to a written estimate before you begin — see what your care costs. Insured? Start with our insurance verification form.
If you are in crisis, do not wait for an appointment.
Call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24 hours a day. If there is immediate danger to life, call 911. Strata Outpatient is a scheduled outpatient clinic — not an emergency service, a crisis line, or a 24/7 provider.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
If what you want to know is not here, call (858) 567-4246 and ask. You will speak to someone who can answer it.
Can I come just for therapy?
Yes. Individual therapy stands on its own. It is also built into our Intensive Outpatient Program as a weekly one-to-one session, so people in the program do not have to arrange it separately.
Will I have to take medication?
No. Therapy and medication management are separate services here, and plenty of people use one without the other. If a prescriber would be worth talking to, we will say so — and the decision stays yours.
How do I know whether therapy is enough on its own?
That is what the assessment is for. It establishes the level of care that fits, which sometimes means weekly therapy and sometimes means the structure of an IOP. We would rather have that conversation at the start than six weeks in.
Is what I tell my therapist private?
Yes. What you tell a clinician here is protected health information, and we treat it that way. Our Notice of Privacy Practices sets out how it is used and the narrow circumstances in which the law requires us to share it.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can call us directly. Referrals from a therapist, physician or psychiatrist are welcome, and we work with referring providers, but you do not need one to start the conversation.
Some insurance plans require a referral or prior authorization for coverage. That is one of the things we check when we verify your benefits.
Do you take my insurance?
We verify your benefits during admissions, before your start date is set, and then walk you through what your plan covers, what it does not, and what your out-of-pocket costs look like. You will know before you begin.
You can start that now through our insurance verification form, or by calling us.
What if I am paying for care myself?
You are entitled to a written Good Faith Estimate of what your care will cost before it begins. We will give you one without your having to ask. See what your care costs for how that works and what to do if a bill ever exceeds it.
